Meet the Emcee | Don Bleu

After 35 years waking the people by the Bay, Don Bleu has left his impact on Northern California. If you haven’t received a “Bleuper Call”, chances are your neighbor, co-worker or sister in law has. After starting his radio career as a part-time job in college at the University of North Dakota, Don moved to Minneapolis and became “ True Don Bleu” at KDWB from 1968-78. In 2000, Don was named to the Minnesota Radio Hall of Fame.

After a two year stint at KHJ, Los Angeles, Don landed at KYUU in San Francisco in 1980 and spent the next three and a half decades on the air in the City by the Bay, the morning personality on KYUU, K101, and Big 103.7. Don Bleu in the Morning meant friendly Bleuper calls, on-air marriages in a blimp over the Golden Gate bridge or under water at Six Flags (not a dry eye in the place), human Irish stew, Girl Scout campfires in front of the Transamerica building, and a Tour de Bleu Hawaiian show featuring the Bar to Breakers run.

Don was twice named National Radio Personality of the year, and was inducted into the Northern California Radio Hall of Fame in 2004. Don’s TV career included hosting the Gong Show, the Know Zone on the Discovery Channel and numerous appearances on The Bay Area’s Evening Magazine, leading to five Emmy awards.
