This Volunteer Appreciation Week, we’re shining a spotlight on the incredible contributions of a handful of our volunteers. Thank you again for everything you do. We are so fortunate to have such a wonderful community of volunteers.

I retired from the tech world and looked for a place to volunteer that directly helped people in my area. I discovered the great work that PVI does and started delivering Meals on Wheels. Later, PVI Little House put out a call for people to help with iPhone and iPad classes for seniors, and since that was something I could do, I signed up to help with that, too. Helping seniors overcome tech hurdles is extremely rewarding. It is hard to negotiate the world today without at least some minimal phone or computer skills, and many seniors were left behind in the rush to technology.

I am an 85-year-old senior and a volunteer since 2014. My story starts with me landing in the US at the age of 74. I left my country, my home, and my friends behind. I was sad, upset, and confused, not knowing how to spend my days, which spread into nothingness, nothing new or interesting except my loving family. Then, my journey with Little House started. I have repeated it many times verbally that it was the best thing that happened to me in the US. My daughter Sonya found the senior center and registered me on 30th October, 2014. I started the next day and am still there. I wanted to go there every day because the atmosphere was so good, the staff so welcoming, and no one asked why I was there every day.

I’m a recently retired software engineer, and after getting out of the Big Tech world, I was struck by how important it is for seniors to learn about technology and the internet. I’ve learned a lot by teaching classes to the seniors here, and my students teach me a lot— sometimes just by asking questions no one has asked me before!

During the pandemic, PVI was one of the few places where volunteers could come and help in person. I live alone, and it has been very important for me to volunteer every day at a place where I can meet kind people and participate in a great organization. It makes me feel needed and helpful.

As a retired high school teacher, I looked for ways to support people’s well-being. Discovering the truly wonderful experiences available to seniors at PVI Little House made me want to become more involved!
“My mom passed away in 2020, and I saw the impact of seniors not being comfortable with technology. Thus, I found this great match at Little House, and 4 years later, I’m still enjoying teaching tech to our seniors.”

I’m passionate about PVI’s mission to help seniors age in place. Having worked here, I’ve seen firsthand the positive impact of their work, and I feel good contributing to my community and brightening someone’s day. It’s a way for me to pay forward the care I’ve received.

While my first visits to PVI Rosener House were as a research assistant, the genuine warmth and happiness of the participants and staff were so inspiring that I felt drawn to become part of their community. That’s what motivated me to volunteer. I’m deeply grateful for the Rosener House community, as it showed me the profound positive impact of volunteering.

After retiring and wanting to give back, I was moved by the isolation my mom experienced during the pandemic due to tech challenges. That’s why I found a perfect fit at Little House (PVI) teaching tech to seniors. Four years later, our fantastic Tech Connect team, led by Debi Suslow, makes learning fun and rewarding, and it truly puts a smile on my face knowing we’re making a difference.
